Times were different. More analogue, although the dot com bubble was in full effect. Then, one day, when you turned on the TV, a yellow BMW roared by on the screen with its inline-six screaming and you were hooked! You sought out a car magazine and read all about it, then excitedly waited to see the first one in person. Once you did, it was love at first sight. Then the love grew through video games starring this car (or its derivatives, like the GTR), your favourite actors drove it in movies – and in real life. Yes, that’s the story of the E46 M3, perhaps the last truly analogue M3. What a moniker it wears – but it is a moniker this car has certainly helped ascertain.

It may be a little rough around the edges, but at sub-30k, this is a wonderful and rare opportunity for someone who likes to get their hands dirty from time to time! Mechanically, the car is in above average condition with bearing rods done at official BMW centre 4 years or 20k km ago. The engine is potent and pulls steadily, the gearbox is good, the suspension is far better than expected given the mileage. An airbag warning light is on, but there are no further faults. Optically, the front bumper needs work, as does the headliner in the interior. There’s not much rust present, however the rear wheel arches reveal some bubbles upon close inspection and the right-hand-side sills may show some rust as well.
Given the desirability of the model, we left this car virtually untouched, in the same condition it first drove onto our lot. This way, an enthusiast can get their hands on a ‘cheap’ E46 M3, and one that’s going to last a long time still, too!
